Popocatépetl is an active stratovolcano located in the states of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico in central Mexico. It lies in the eastern half of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. At 5,452 m it is the second highest peak in Mexico, after Citlaltépetl at 5,636 m. Popocatépetl is ranked 89th by prominence.
This dormant stratovolcano has a characteristic conical shape with a prominence of 17,887 feet. The summit crater rises several hundreds of feet from rim to jagged peak.
It’s name means "Smoking Mountain" in Nahuatl language.
