Grandfather Mountain is best known for its mile-high swinging bridge, which connects two of the mountain's rocky peaks. The bridge was built in 1952 by Hugh Morton and is the highest swinging bridge in the nation. The mountain was under private ownership by the Morton family as a nature preserve and tourist attraction until September, 2008, when the state of North Carolina purchased 2,600 acres of the undeveloped portions. The area became the 34th state park in the North Carolina system.
