While it is said that “close” only counts in the game of horseshoes, for the annual thousands of trekkers on Himalayan trails, close to Everest counts in a big way. For most, the trek begins in Lukla, and ends 8 days later—including a day of acclimation at Namche Bazaar and later, at Dingboche. The final approach is by way of Garakshep, the flat field below the 5,545 meter Kala Patthar and 7,161 meter Mt. Pumori. South Base Camp is one of two rudimentary campsites on Mount Everest used by climbers during their ascent and descent. North Base Camp is located on the Tibet side of the mountain.
