Each year the precise location of the Geographic South Pole is determined by a team of scientists of the US Geological Survey. At this point, a hefty 5-inch brass marker, attached to rebar, is set in the Antarctic ice cap. Once set, it joins over 40 others on its slow and steady path away from the position of 90 degrees south as the ice cap continues its movement of approximately 30 meters per year.
A unique marker is designed each year to commemorate this special location. Occurring on first day of each year, setting the mark is an occasion of scientific study and local celebration.
The 2002 marker is a handsome design featuring the familiar geodesic dome and the on-going construction of the Amundsen-Scott Station.
